The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has requested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) investigate all state accounts in order to identify governors who used state funds to pay their children’s school fees.
Making this appeal in a statement issued on its official X Twitter, the right organization stated that if such an incidence occurred, the school where the monies were paid should be required to reimburse the money.
BREAKING: We encourage the EFCC and ICPC to investigate the accounts of Nigeria’s 36 states and FCT to ascertain whether public funds are being used to pay school fees for the children of public officials and to disclose their findings. The schools implicated should be required to reimburse the funds with interest,” according to the group’s statement.
The group demand comes as the fraud case against former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello moves forward.

Yahaya Bello reportedly paid school fees in advance for his family members and even those who will enroll in the future, withdrawing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Kogi State coffers.
Payment was also made for any future students registered by the family.
However, an emerging report stated that the school requested an account where the state’s fund will be repaid to.
