The Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party has demanded that Julius Abure stop presenting himself as the party’s national chairman, asserting that his tenure officially ended on June 9, 2024.
During a press conference in Abuja, the Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, Salisu Mohammad, explained that this directive followed a resolution made at a stakeholder meeting in Umuahia, led by the legitimate Caretaker Committee under Nenadi Usman.
Mohammad highlighted that the National Transitional Committee (NTC) has been actively engaging with stakeholders to address what they describe as Abure’s unlawful actions and corruption. He noted that Abure assumed the role of national chairman after the unexpected death of the previous chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, in 2000, and has led the party without a formal election.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already instructed him to vacate the position intended for the Labour Party’s chairman,” Mohammad said.
He further explained that the NTC’s efforts led to a critical meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party in Umuahia. The NEC’s decisions, supported by the NTC and facilitated by the Nigerian Labour Congress as the party’s trustee, were endorsed during the NEC meeting on September 4, 2024.
“We fully support the 29-man Caretaker Committee tasked with organizing democratic congresses to elect new party leadership at the Ward, Local Government Area (LGA), State, and National levels,” Mohammad stated.
He added that the NEC’s intervention, convened by Governor Alex Otti of Abia, was a necessary step to rescue the party from what he described as unlawful activities. “This intervention aligns with the democratic will of millions of Nigerians who want to see the party thrive, not succumb to the actions of political operatives intent on destroying it,” Mohammad concluded.
