No fewer than two underaged girls identified as Maimuna Hassan (3-year-old) and another, Rabi Balarabe (12-year-old), have reportedly drowned in Dutse and Kafin Hausa areas of Jigawa State.

The spokesperson, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Jigawa State Command, CSC Adamu Shehu who confirmed the development said Maimuna met her untimely death in a neighbourhood water drain pit in Madobi village in Dutse.
CSC Shehu said the horrible incident occurred on Monday evening when the young girl left their home around 1700hrs to join her other siblings to play outside the house but unfortunately fell inside the unnoticed open pit.

“A search was conducted throughout the neighborhood over her whereabouts,” he claimed, “but produced no results. Before a friend of her brother noticed her floating gown inside a water drain pit a short distance from her home at around 2030 hours. When she was eventually extracted from the pit and taken to the General Hospital in Dutse, a doctor declared her dead.

After that, her remains were given to her father, Hassan Ibrahim of Kofar Fada, Madobi, for a respectable funeral, he claimed.

In addition, 12-year-old Rabi Balarabe of Ashuran Makera Village, Kafin Hausa LGA, drowned on Sunday in the Waterway Ashura, a nearby river, according to CSC Shehu.

“The aforementioned Rabi Balarabe went to wash her clothes with friends, and when she was finished, she made the tragic decision to take a bath, which led to her death. After being admitted to Kafin Hausa General Hospital, she was subsequently pronounced dead and released to her parents for burial.

“While expressing sympathy to the families of the deceased for this tragic tragedy, the Command warned people who were building drain holes without properly covering them to stop doing so because doing so posed a threat to the safety of young children.

CSC Shehu disagreed, saying, “Parents are usually recommended to counsel their children against swimming in rivers and ponds, and if they must permit them to do so, they should be under the supervision and care of an adult.”
