The 2027 election security roadmap has taken centre stage as senior police officers and security stakeholders meet in Owerri, Imo State, to address threats ahead of Nigeria’s general elections.

The discussions formed part of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, CARSPO 2026, which began in Owerri on Monday. The event focuses on developing practical measures for managing election security before, during and after the 2027 polls.

Retired Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro warned that Nigeria’s security challenges could complicate the electoral process. He pointed to terrorism in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and North-Central, separatist agitation and rising cases of kidnapping, cybercrime and cultism.

Okiro also raised concerns about allegations linking political, business, military and traditional interests to the financing of banditry. He said such allegations had weakened public confidence and made intelligence gathering more difficult.

Meanwhile, the conference has highlighted emerging digital threats. Artificial intelligence can generate convincing false audio, video and images. Security officials therefore want the police to prepare for disinformation that could influence public opinion or trigger unrest.

The Nigeria Police Force said CARSPO 2026 would examine intelligence-led policing, police-community partnerships, digital technology and artificial intelligence. The Force also wants strategies to protect voters, electoral officials, candidates and election materials.

The retreat brings together senior police commanders, security experts and other stakeholders. Representatives of electoral and civil society organisations are also taking part.

The 2027 election security roadmap is expected to translate these discussions into practical security measures. The challenge will be turning the plans into effective action across Nigeria’s diverse security environment.

For voters, the outcome will matter most at polling units, campaign venues and during the movement of election materials.
