Seun Egbegbe, a producer for Nollywood films, is now free again after spending three years in detention.
On February 10, 2017, the director and producer was placed on detention for allegedly acquiring money under false pretenses from no less than 40 Bureaus De Change operators located around Lagos State.
He was charged with defrauding the BDC operators by claiming to have foreign currency to exchange for naira and vice versa.
For a series of frauds totalling N39,098,100, $90,000, and £12,550, Egbegebe was docked.
On February 10, 2017, Seun Egbegbe and another person, Oyekan Ayomide, were initially charged with 36 counts of alleged advance fee fraud before Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo.
Later, Lawal Kareem, Olalekan Yusuf, and Muyideen Shoyombo joined the pair on a 49-count accusation.
However, Egbegbe was freed on October 11 after a Federal High Court in Lagos’ Ikoyi district judged him guilty of just one of the 44 crimes brought against him.
Due to a lack of witnesses to back up their accusations, 43 of the 44 count charges were dropped, according to Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo.
She also bemoaned the prosecution’s failure to fulfill its obligation to present witnesses and evidence in support of Counts 4, 19, and 21.
Justice Oguntoyinbo also decided that all of the money taken from Egbegbe as evidence should be restored to him, noting that the police tampered with the money taken from the suspects.
