Mondo Duplantis, an Olympic and world champion in the pole vault, won the Berlin indoor competition on Friday with a height of 6.06 meters, but he was unable to break the previous world record of 6.22 meters in any of his three attempts.
After his 6.10m in Uppsala the previous week, it was the Swede’s second six-meter clearance of the winter season and his 42nd overall.
Duplantis easily won the 5.60m, 5.82m, 5.91m, and 6.06m events on Friday before failing in his effort to break his own world record of 6.21m, which he had established in Eugene in July of last year.
The athlete commented, “My tries at 6.22m were good; I was closer than last week which is good.”
“Everything has to be flawless to attain 6.22m, and I wasn’t quite perfect enough to make it here,” I said.
Kurtis Marschall of Australia and Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines each managed 5.82m on Friday, placing as his closest competitors.
This winter, Duplantis still has two more tournaments to attempt to break his world record: Lievin on February 15 and Clermont ten days later.
After that, he will choose whether or not to compete in the European Indoor Championships, which will be held in Istanbul from March 2–5.
