The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after succumbing to injuries sustained during a gun attack by yet-to-be-identified assailants in Lagos.
Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. According to eyewitness accounts, armed gunmen intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullet holes.
Images and videos that surfaced on social media shortly after the attack showed Ajiboye’s white vehicle with multiple bullet holes across the windscreen and body. Initial reports suggested that he and other occupants survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot wounds. However, later updates confirmed that the NURTW official died from injuries suffered during the incident.
Reacting to the tragic development, the Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Council, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his longtime associate and union leader.
In a heartfelt tribute shared on his Facebook page, Sego described Ajiboye as a dependable ally, loyal friend, and one of the strongest pillars of TeamSego and SegoNation.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally,” Sego wrote.
He added that Ajiboye’s unwavering dedication to the union and his support over the years would remain unforgettable, describing him as a man whose loyalty and commitment inspired many within the transport union.
Sego also extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and members of the NURTW, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and comfort those mourning his passing.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have not announced any arrests in connection with the attack, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are expected to continue.
