Babatunji Wusu –

There was a stir in the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday following the selection of Senator Abba Moro, a senator from Benue South, as minority leader, and Senator Osita Ngwu, a legislator from Enugu West, as minority whip.

The senators for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took the positions of Darlington Nwokocha, who represented Abia Central, and Simon Mwadkwon, who represented Plateau North.

The Court of Appeal fired both Mwadkwon and Nwokocha.

Nwokocha of the Labour Party (LP) served as the minority whip, whereas Mwadkwon, the former minority leader, is a member of the PDP.

An fight broke out on the parliament floor shortly after Senate President Godswill Akpabio concluded reading the statements allegedly from the minority caucus.

Tony Nwoye, a senator from Anambra North, claimed that it was unjust for the Senate President to select their leaders.

Nwoye shouted, “Are we your slaves? “to the presiding officer. Why will the president of the Senate select our leaders?

“You’ve given it your all. We are at our wits’ end thanks to you. In what sense? It’s not fair. It is about the state’s institution, not about myself.

Akpabio clarified that the two minority leaders had presented the signatures of the senators who supported the decision, after a few senators had managed to appease Nwoye.

“Minority, first get your house in order,” he urged.

The president of the Senate is limited to what is in front of him. Senator Abaribe and Aliero are here; their names are not on this list.

Akpabio continued by expressing his sympathy with the Senate’s minority party.
