Babatunji Wusu –
Residents of Kano State, especially those in the capital, are anxiously awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision over today’s Kano Governorship election.
Schools and financial institutions are reportedly closed in preparation for any unrest that might break out following the ruling.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPP) nominee for governor of Kano in 2023, Abba Yusuf, is anticipated to get a decision from the Supreme Court that will decide whether or not he will remain in office as state governor.
The beleaguered governor is asking the Supreme Court to reverse the decisions made by the Kano Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which dismissed him and pronounced the victor of the gubernatorial contest to be the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
But the much-awaited decision has left the city noticeably unsettled because of audible signs of conflict brought on by remarks made by APC and NNPP members.
Regular activities at private schools in the city have already been suspended due to heightened tension and security issues. Private schools have confirmed to our correspondent that schools will be closed on Friday, even though the government has not yet announced the closure.
Nonetheless, both during and after the decision, the state’s Police Command has pledged to protect persons and property.
At the Bompai Police Headquarters on Thursday, Mohammed Gumel, the Commissioner of Police (CP), informed media that the state’s security apparatus has implemented measures to maintain calm and tranquility.
The police head reassured the locals that they shouldn’t have to worry about being harassed or molested in order to go about their lawful business.
