Babatunj WUSU –
The Yola Zone branch of the Academic Staff Union of colleges (ASUU) has denounced the federal government’s oppressive policy toward Nigerian colleges and issued a dire warning if the current state of affairs continues.
In addition, the union denounced the government’s continuous disregard for previous accords, arguing that it is bad for the country’s higher education system.
Prof. Dani Mammam, the zonal coordinator of ASUU Yola Zone, expressed grave concern about the government’s blatant contempt for signed agreements during a news conference yesterday in Yola.
“The eight-month strike in 2022 was to pressure the federal government to implement the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed on February 7, 2019. We are not demanding anything new, just the fulfilment of the existing agreement,” he said.
The 2009 agreement, earned academic allowances, state university governance, revitalization funding, and other important issues are all addressed in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the federal government and ASUU.
He emphasized that the majority of the deadlines have gone with no action, indicating that the government has not fulfilled its obligations in spite of these agreements.
