Babatunji Wusu –
Following their dismal performance in Abidjan, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have announced on their official Instagram page that they are returning to their home nation.
The Super Eagles were anticipated to overcome Benin Republic on Monday, June 10, to get back on track in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after drawing 1-1 with South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Even though they scored the first goal against the Cheetahs, the Nigerian team led by Finidi George, the former manager of Enyimba, unfortunately crumbled.
The Super Eagles now have a steep mountain to climb in order to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing 2-1 against coach Gernot Rohr’s team.
Remember that the Nigerian team, up against so-called minnows like Lesotho and Benin Republic, drew 1-1 in their opening three games of the qualification round.
These surprising outcomes have left the Super Eagles in fifth place in Group C, four colossal points behind leaders Benin Republic.
The Super Eagles have assured Nigerian fans that they will do all it takes to make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, knowing full well how difficult it will be for them to qualify after their dismal run of games.
“We are back in the country and we are not happy about the way the two games panned out”, the Super Eagles said on Tuesday, June 11.
“We have had talks among ourselves and have resolved to fight hard till the end to ensure we do the impossible which is qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
“We don’t take your support for granted, we thank you.”
