Soldiers from the 6 Division Nigerian Army have achieved great success in their latest fight against criminals. Working with other security groups, they have increased their raids to stop crude oil theft across the Niger Delta. Between 1 and 26 April 2026, the troops arrested nine suspects and closed down many illegal refining camps. These successful missions led to the recovery of over 130,000 litres of stolen crude and thousands of litres of diesel.

In Rivers State, the army found an abandoned truck in the Ahoada East area. This vehicle was carrying 45,000 litres of illegal fuel. Soldiers also raided the Orashi National Forest, where they discovered a massive storage site. During this operation, they destroyed dangerous equipment like pipes and ovens used by the thieves. The military officials valued the seized products at more than N250 million.

The crackdown on crude oil theft continued in other regions as well. In Delta State, troops found a hidden tapping point used to steal oil from pipelines. Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom, they recovered over 1,300 litres of refined fuel after the suspects ran away. Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah praised the soldiers for their hard work. He said: “I commend the troops for their resilience,” and told them to keep fighting against those who hurt the economy.

The army is determined to end crude oil theft to protect the nation’s wealth. By destroying these illegal sites, they are making it much harder for criminal networks to operate in the Niger Delta. These operations will continue until the area is safe and the oil industry is secure from illegal activities.

What more can be done to provide alternative jobs for youths involved in illegal refining?
