The Edo State House of Assembly recently made headlines with its decision to recall Bright Iyamu, one of three lawmakers who had been suspended earlier this year. This move comes after the Assembly’s initial suspension of the trio in May, following allegations of a plot to impeach Speaker Blessing Agbebaku and other key officials.
Speaker Agbebaku, addressing the Assembly in Benin City, the state capital, named the suspended lawmakers as Donald Okogbe (PDP Akoko-Edo II), Bright Iyamu (PDP-Orhionmwon South), and Adeh Isibor (PDP-Esan North East I). He cited their alleged involvement in a scheme to disrupt the Assembly’s leadership, attributing their actions to external influences and even claiming that native doctors were brought into the Assembly complex to perform mystical rituals.
As of now, Bright Iyamu’s suspension has been lifted, with the Speaker indicating that the Assembly found him to be remorseful during a recent plenary session. This decision has sparked calls from other lawmakers for similar reconsideration of Donald Okogbe and Adeh Isibor’s suspensions. However, Speaker Agbebaku noted that Isibor’s case is currently before the courts, implying a more complex resolution process for his suspension.
The recall of Bright Iyamu marks a significant development in the ongoing saga within the Edo State House of Assembly, underscoring the delicate balance of power and internal dynamics at play within the legislative body. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Assembly will navigate the remaining suspensions and maintain its operations amidst these internal challenges.
