Ghana’s Vice-President, Mahamudu Bawumia, has conceded defeat to John Mahama in the country’s presidential election.
Preliminary results show Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leading with 976,644 votes (56.39%), while Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) trails with 738,493 votes (42.64%).
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Bawumia stated that his decision to concede was in Ghana’s best interest. He disclosed that he had already congratulated Mahama and acknowledged the victory of the NDC in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Bawumia emphasized the need to maintain peace and avoid tension ahead of the electoral commission’s official declaration. He also reassured the global investor community of Ghana’s commitment to democracy and stability.
