The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kwara State has given the state government a 72-hour ultimatum to release the withheld November 2024 salaries for local government workers. This follows a statement issued by Isiah Elachochi Eugene, the Secretary of the NLC’s state chapter, which highlighted that about 75% of workers, particularly those employed in local government areas, have yet to receive their November pay.
The affected workers are from various unions, including the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM). The NLC has urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to intervene and ensure that the November salaries are paid immediately, ahead of the December salary disbursement, to prevent industrial unrest.
The NLC further emphasized that it will not accept the payment of December salaries without settling the November arrears. If the government fails to act within the specified period, the NLC warned that it would invoke relevant provisions of the labor law to initiate a full shutdown of the state by December 19, 2024.
