Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has resigned as part of a government reshuffle ordered by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The move comes as Ukraine faces growing security and economic challenges during its more than four-year war with Russia.

Ukraine’s parliament approved Yulia Svyrydenko’s resignation on Tuesday. Although President Zelensky has not announced her successor, he said the government is “changing its political strategy” to respond to “new challenges and new tasks”.

Svyrydenko took office in July 2025 and built strong working relationships with US officials. She played a leading role in negotiating a minerals investment agreement with Washington following President Zelensky’s Oval Office meeting with US President Donald Trump.

The government reshuffle comes as Russia increases its ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine, while Kyiv pushes ahead with plans to produce US Patriot air defence systems locally. Despite these developments, the position of prime minister does not usually influence military operations, as President Zelensky and senior military commanders oversee defence strategy.

Announcing the changes, Zelensky said he intends to assign different officials to oversee key areas of foreign policy. He also revealed that he had offered Yulia Svyrydenko a new position responsible for managing relations with a key partner, although he did not provide further details.

After leaving office, Svyrydenko said she had achieved “concrete results” during her time as prime minister. She also shared a photograph of herself making a heart symbol with her hands while addressing parliament.

Reports in Ukrainian media suggest that Sergiy Koretsky, the chief executive of the state energy company Naftogaz, is the leading candidate to replace her. Zelensky recently praised Koretsky’s leadership in the energy sector, which remains vital as Russian attacks continue to damage Ukraine’s power infrastructure and cause widespread electricity shortages.

What impact do you think this leadership change could have on Ukraine’s response to the ongoing conflict?
