The Defence Headquarters has called on Nigerians to ignore what it describes as “malicious allegations” surrounding visa denials for members of the Nigerian military team invited to the Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, clarified the situation, urging the public to support wounded servicemen and women who have made sacrifices for national security.

According to Gusau, the Nigerian military received an official invitation to participate in the Invictus Games with a team comprising three officers and 21 athletes, including a physiotherapist. The Invictus Games Foundation had made provisions for accommodation and meals for all participants.

“Despite our best efforts, only 14 members of the team were granted visas, while seven of our athletes, who had the potential to excel, were denied entry. Unfortunately, this prevented them from showcasing their abilities on the global stage,” he stated.

Gusau emphasized that despite this setback, the Nigerian team delivered an outstanding performance, securing gold, silver, and bronze medals—an achievement that brought pride to the nation and the African continent.

He also noted that the presence of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, would have provided additional motivation for the troops.

“It is well-documented that the Chief of Defence Staff has implemented various initiatives to boost the morale of our service personnel, who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the country,” he added.

One such initiative is the establishment of the Invictus Foundation Centre, the first of its kind in Africa, which is currently under construction. The center aims to provide mental and physical rehabilitation for wounded personnel, ensuring they receive the necessary support for recovery and reintegration.
