Tensions Soar in Rivers as Lawmakers Accuse Governor Fubara of Gross Misconduct

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a notice of alleged gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. This move, reported by Channels TV, marks another escalation in the ongoing political battle between Mr. Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It remains unclear when the notice was officially served, but sources indicate it is part of renewed efforts by lawmakers loyal to Mr. Wike to remove the governor. This is the second impeachment attempt against Mr. Fubara since he assumed office in May 2023.

The political crisis in Rivers State stems from a fierce struggle for control of the state’s political structure. Mr. Fubara, once seen as an ally of Mr. Wike, has since fallen out with the former governor, leading to divisions within the state’s ruling political class.

In a previous attempt to remove the governor, the pro-Wike lawmakers had declared his seat vacant, a move that led to legal battles and interventions by the federal government. However, despite multiple peace efforts, tensions have persisted, with both factions refusing to back down.

Observers believe this latest impeachment move could further deepen the political crisis in the oil-rich state. As of now, there has been no official response from Governor Fubara or his deputy regarding the allegations.

Details later…
