-Victims of Plateau Mob Attack Buried Amid Tight Security
Kaduna Governor Demands Swift Justice, Condemns Killings as Barbaric

Twelve victims of Friday night’s mob attack in Mangun District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, were laid to rest on Saturday evening at the Hayi Muslim Cemetery in Mangu.

The deceased, including women and children, were among a 31-member group from Basawa community in Zaria, Kaduna State, travelling in an Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria-branded 18-seater bus to Qua’an Pan LGA for a wedding ceremony when they were ambushed and lynched.

According to eyewitness accounts, the group lost their way and stopped to ask for directions before the mob descended on them.

The burial was conducted amid tight security presence to prevent escalation of tensions. Religious leaders confirmed that the victims’ families consented to the burial in Plateau, citing the need to avoid possible unrest in their hometown of Zaria.

Leading the funeral prayers, Sheikh Suleiman Haruna described the incident as painful but urged mourners to accept it as the will of Allah. He cautioned against retaliation and commended both security agents and local authorities for acting swiftly to contain the crisis.

Reacting to the tragedy, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, condemned the killings as “barbaric and senseless”. He called on security agencies to track down and prosecute the attackers without delay.

“I urge Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau to take firm and decisive action. This cannot be swept under the carpet,” Sani declared in a statement.

He assured Kaduna residents that the state government is supporting the victims’ families, and that the 11 survivors are receiving full medical attention at Mangu General Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government also condemned the incident, describing it as a threat to peace, and vowed to ensure that justice is served.

The attack has sparked outrage on social media and among civil society groups who are calling for urgent reforms to curb mob violence and protect innocent travellers across Nigeria’s roads.
