-Reds shortlist Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike as replacement options
-Uruguayan’s time at Anfield nears end amid summer rebuild
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is on the verge of a summer exit, with the club lining up potential replacements as part of a reshuffle under new manager Arne Slot.
According to football transfer expert David Ornstein, the Reds are prioritising the signing of a new number nine and have placed Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike on their radar.
Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for €85 million, has struggled to deliver consistent performances despite showing flashes of brilliance. In 95 Premier League appearances, the Uruguayan has registered 25 goals and 16 assists—a return many at Anfield see as below expectations for such a hefty price tag.
Liverpool’s interest in a new striker will only materialise fully if Nunez is sold, and sources say progress on his departure is expected soon. Slot, who is overseeing his first transfer window since taking over from Jürgen Klopp, is keen on reshaping the attack and reinforcing Liverpool’s title ambitions.
The club’s cautious transfer strategy signals they won’t spend big on another striker unless Nunez’s exit frees up funds and space in the squad. Isak, who has impressed at Newcastle, and Ekitike, known for his potential and versatility, are seen as ideal fits for Slot’s dynamic style of play.
As the summer window intensifies, Liverpool fans can expect movement in the coming weeks as decisions around Nunez’s future take shape.
