Barely a week after the death of Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor representing Ward C in Ibeju-Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State has again been thrown into mourning following the death of another female councillor, Hon. Zainab Adesewa Shotayo.

Shotayo, who represented Ward C3 in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, reportedly died after a brief illness. She was aged 30.

The late councillor, who was recently inaugurated as a member of the 6th Legislative House of the Council, was also the Chief Whip of the legislative arm until her demise.

Confirming her death, the Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Hon. Seyi Kehinde, expressed deep grief over the loss, describing her as a promising leader whose dedication to service was unmatched.

In a statement issued by his media office, Kehinde said:

“Hon. Zainab Shotayo was not only the youngest member of the Council but also an exemplary leader who inspired many through her resilience and commitment to public service. Her role as Chief Whip highlighted her passion for improving the lives of her constituents and serving as a role model, particularly for young women aspiring to leadership roles.”

He further noted that her death was a huge blow to the Council and the entire Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye community, adding that she left behind a legacy of service and selflessness.

The statement read:

“The loss of Hon. Shotayo is a profound one for our community. On behalf of the Council and the people of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, I extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and constituents in Ward C3 during this painful period. We grieve with you as we honour her contributions and the positive impact she made in our community.

“As we mourn her passing, I encourage our people to carry forward her vision for a brighter and prosperous future. Let us honour her memory by striving to uphold the values she stood for and continuing the work she was so passionate about.”

The news of her death has thrown the LCDA into mourning, with sympathisers trooping to her family residence to commiserate with her loved ones.

Her passing comes just days after the council lost another female legislator, Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai of Ibeju-Lekki LCDA, also to a brief illness, raising concerns among residents over the back-to-back losses.

Hon. Shotayo is survived by her family and a host of political associates who described her as vibrant, dedicated, and full of promise.
