Political dominance in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State shifted on Saturday as more than 10,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and other political groups defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The mass defection coincided with the official unveiling of the ADC in Agatu by the State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Terngu Tsegba, who hailed the event as the largest in Benue’s political history.
Sir John Ngbede, a former PDP Chairman and ex-Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 elections, was introduced as the ADC leader in Agatu. Ngbede, who also donated a building to serve as the party’s secretariat, declared that the reign of PDP and APC in Agatu was over, a statement that triggered thunderous cheers from the crowd.
Tsegba praised Ngbede for mobilizing grassroots support, describing him as a political force whose influence continues to shape the district. He assured supporters that the ADC would entrench inclusiveness, stability, and internal democracy, expressing confidence the party would sweep upcoming elections in the LGA.
The ceremony also featured the commissioning of the new secretariat and attracted party leaders, political stakeholders, and dignitaries including Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu, Hon. Chris Adaba Aba, Hon. David Adejoh Olofu, Rt. Hon. Herman Hembe, Chief Mrs. Abeje Egwa, Prof. Salifu David, among several others.
The ADC emphasized that its focus remains on grassroots engagement and community development, signaling a fresh political chapter for Agatu.
