United States President Donald Trump says Washington, in collaboration with NATO allies, is intensifying diplomatic and strategic efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Trump disclosed this on Thursday during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in the Oval Office, confirming that Western nations were “stepping up the pressure” on Russia to halt the conflict that has raged since 2022.
“Yeah, we are stepping up the pressure,” Trump told an AFP reporter when asked if his administration would increase efforts for a peace deal.
“We’re stepping it up together. We’re all stepping it up. NATO has been great,” he added, commending the alliance’s united front.
The move signals renewed urgency within Washington and NATO to find a resolution to the prolonged war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. Despite several international mediation attempts, peace efforts have stalled as Russian attacks continue across Ukrainian territories.
Trump, who recently brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, admitted that resolving the Ukraine crisis has proven far more challenging.
“This one is proving harder,” he said, drawing a comparison between the Middle East peace process and the European conflict.
In August, Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for direct peace talks, but the meeting ended without tangible progress. Since then, Moscow has reportedly intensified its military offensive in Ukraine, raising doubts about Russia’s commitment to dialogue.
On Wednesday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that momentum toward a peace deal had “largely vanished” following the Alaska meeting, accusing Western nations of “inconsistency and political gamesmanship.”
Despite this, Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed optimism that Trump could eventually broker a deal.
“I think this one will be the next big one,” Stubb told reporters, expressing confidence in Trump’s diplomatic ability after his success in the Gaza peace talks.
Observers say the renewed push by the United States could involve tighter economic sanctions on Moscow, expanded military support for Kyiv, and intensified diplomatic engagement with neutral nations.
The war, now in its fourth year, has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, mass displacement, and deepening global divisions. Many international analysts believe Trump’s next steps will determine whether peace talks can gain new momentum or if the conflict will continue indefinitely.
