The Gombe State Police Command has confirmed the death of the driver of the late Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Col. Abdullahi Bello (retd.), raising the death toll from Thursday’s fatal highway crash to three.

Police spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, in a statement on Saturday, said the driver succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a medical facility. The crash occurred on the Kwami–Malam Sidi–Gombe highway as the commissioner, his police orderly, and the driver were returning from Maiduguri, Borno State, where Bello had attended a regional consultation on disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration.

Col. Bello, his orderly, Corporal Adamu Hussaini, and now the driver, all died less than 24 hours apart from the impact of the collision.

“The Gombe State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Gombe State, as well as to the families of the late Commissioner, his police orderly, and the driver who died today, October 25, 2025, while receiving treatment,” Abdullahi stated.

He described the deceased as “committed public servants who gave their lives in service to peace and security,” adding that the tragedy has dealt a heavy blow to the state’s security architecture.

“Their selfless dedication to duty will be remembered with great respect,” he said, praying for the repose of their souls and strength for the grieving families.
