At least six people have reportedly been killed in Benue attacks after suspected armed herdsmen raided communities in Ukum Local Government Area. Several residents remain unaccounted for following the latest violence.
The attacks occurred on Friday evening in Tse-Nyaku, Biliji and other communities across the Mbatian and Mbazum districts.
A resident of Mbatian, Aondofa David, confirmed that the attacks took place on Friday. A security source also said several residents remained missing.
However, a resident of Biliji, who requested anonymity, said the death toll could rise as residents continue to search for missing people.
The resident said nine people were believed to have died, although authorities and residents had recovered only six bodies as of the time of filing this report.
The reported killings bring renewed attention to the security situation in Ukum, where the latest attacks have affected several communities.
Efforts to obtain an official response from Ukum Local Government Chairman Jonathan Modi were unsuccessful. He did not answer telephone calls placed to him.
However, one of his aides said the chairman was attending to victims of the attacks.
The aide did not provide further details about the victims or the local government’s response.
The full number of casualties remains unclear, while several residents are still reportedly missing.
There was no official confirmation of the reported death toll in the information available at the time of filing this report.
Benue attacks in Ukum Local Government Area have left residents reporting deaths and missing persons after the Friday evening raids. Further details, including an official casualty figure and information about any security response, remain unavailable.
