The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region, following rising coups and failed mutinies that continue to rattle political stability in member states.
ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, issued the declaration on Tuesday during the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council at ministerial level in Abuja. The emergency decision, he said, reflects the bloc’s alarm over the escalating breakdown of constitutional rule in parts of West Africa.
Touray warned that the resurgence of military interventions underscores “the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
The emergency move signals a tougher stance by ECOWAS as it battles internal security threats, democratic reversals, and armed uprisings that have tested the region’s collective stability over the last three years.
