The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dissolved the executives of 14 state chapters of the party and announced plans to conduct fresh congresses in January 2026.
The faction’s Caretaker Committee declared that the leadership of Mohammed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as Acting National Secretary remains the only legitimate national structure of the party.
The group disclosed this in a statement issued after its meeting on Thursday night in Abuja, amid reports that PDP governors had endorsed the Ibadan national convention, where Tanimu Turaki and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were elected on November 16 for a four-year tenure.
Despite the governors’ position, the Wike-aligned bloc insisted that Abdulrahman and Anyanwu continue to hold the offices of Acting National Chairman and Acting National Secretary, respectively.
The crisis deepened earlier in December when PDP governors facilitated a smooth handover from former Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to Turaki ahead of the official end of Damagum’s tenure on December 9. However, on December 8, the Wike-backed faction went ahead to appoint Abdulrahman, Anyanwu and 11 others as members of a 60-day caretaker committee.
The caretaker committee was mandated to conduct all outstanding congresses within the 60-day window and convene a national convention.
While Turaki has since held a series of consultations and meetings with party stakeholders, the Abdulrahman/Anyanwu-led caretaker committee has also continued to assert authority, rolling out parallel activities and decisions.
The Acting Publicity Secretary of the faction said the dissolution affected PDP state executives in Borno, Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Delta, Taraba, Kano and Lagos states.
In the statement, the faction reaffirmed its grip on the party, insisting that internal disputes would not weaken its structure.
“To tell the teeming members of our party and the general public that the PDP remains strong and indivisible. There is only one genuine and legitimate PDP, headed by Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed,” the statement added.
