Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, on Thursday officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), formalising her move with the collection of the party’s membership card.

The registration ceremony, held at the ADC National Headquarters in Wuse, Abuja, marked her complete exit from the Labour Party and her entry into the opposition platform.

The event attracted top ADC national officers, candidates contesting the February 21 FCT Area Council elections, party supporters and members of the media.

Political observers attributed the delay in Senator Kingibe’s defection to lingering internal crises within the Labour Party and the prolonged indecision of its national leader, Peter Obi, which they said weakened internal cohesion and strategic direction.

Speaking through her aides, the lawmaker said her decision was driven by a commitment to inclusive governance, accountability and the need for a more structured and effective opposition.

Her defection is expected to strengthen the ADC’s political presence in the FCT ahead of forthcoming local government elections and reshape opposition dynamics within the territory.
