The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to remain with the party and reject any move to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The appeal came on Monday in Kano, where the state chairman of the NNPP, Suleiman Dungurawa, addressed journalists at a press briefing amid growing speculation over possible defections.
Dungurawa dismissed claims that elements within the party were working to sow discord between the governor and the NNPP’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He stressed that both the state and national leadership of the party were united and firmly opposed to any defection.
He cautioned party members against associating themselves with documents allegedly being circulated by mischief makers to justify a move to the APC, warning that such actions do not reflect the position of the party.
Dungurawa also called on residents of Kano State to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, assuring them that the party remains focused on its mandate.
According to him, the NNPP leadership at all levels has not endorsed the reported plans by some individuals to defect, insisting that the party, its national leadership, and Kwankwaso do not support any move away from the NNPP.
The appeal followed comments credited to the Director-General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano State Government House, Abdullahi Rogo, who claimed that Kano residents and voters had agreed that both Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf should defect from the NNPP to the APC.
