The Chairman of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, John Gabaya, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to strengthen governance and align with the Federal Government.
Gabaya announced his defection in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ernest Agada.
According to the statement, the decision followed “fervent prayers and wide consultations” with key stakeholders and was carried out in accordance with the constitutional provisions of both parties.
“I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform for advancing peace, unity and development in Bwari Area Council, Abuja,” Gabaya declared.
He explained that the move would foster stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, enabling more effective and sustainable development initiatives within the council.
Elected on the platform of the PDP in 2019, Gabaya is currently serving his second term as chairman and is expected to complete his tenure in June.
The council boss is also positioning himself for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
While expressing appreciation to members of the PDP for their support throughout his political journey, Gabaya commended their resilience and commitment. He, however, stressed that his defection should not be viewed as an act of hostility but rather a strategic decision taken in the broader interest of development.
He also expressed optimism about the 2027 general elections, praying for a peaceful and credible process, and voiced confidence that Bwari Area Council would deliver strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
