As Christians across the world mark Palm Sunday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigerian leaders to demonstrate empathy and take urgent steps to ease the growing burden on citizens.

In a statement signed by its President, Daniel Okoh, CAN said the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem was not a display of power, but a profound message of peace, humility, and hope.

The association noted that in a tense and uncertain time, Jesus chose simplicity—riding on a colt rather than showcasing authority—an example it says remains relevant for leadership today.

CAN expressed concern over the economic realities facing Nigerians, pointing to the rising cost of living and increasing hardship for families across the country. It also highlighted global tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, noting that these developments are already impacting Nigeria through higher fuel prices, transportation costs, and food inflation.

“Across Nigeria, many are feeling the weight of the times,” the statement read. “For countless families, daily life is getting harder.”

CAN stressed that in moments of uncertainty, leadership must inspire confidence and stability. It urged those in positions of authority to act with restraint, compassion, and a commitment to the common good.

According to the Christian body, true leadership is reflected in decisions that reduce hardship, calm public anxiety, and promote unity rather than division.

The association also called on citizens, particularly people of faith, to embrace the spirit of Palm Sunday by promoting peace, supporting one another, and remaining hopeful despite current challenges.

It encouraged Nigerians, especially young people and those most affected by the economic situation, not to lose hope, emphasizing that the present difficulties are not permanent.

“As we journey through this sacred season,” the statement added, “may the spirit of Palm Sunday guide us towards courage, unity, and a renewed commitment to the good of all.”
