The Nigeria Police Force has ordered strict disciplinary and legal measures against ASP Nuhu Usman following a tragic event in Delta State. The officer is accused of the fatal shooting of a suspect named Mene Ogidi in the Effurun area. According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police leadership strongly condemns the killing. They described the event, which took place on 26 April 2026, as a result of a firearm discharge that violated official regulations.
The situation began when officers from the Effurun Area Command received a tip-off from a local motor park. Members of a transport union had reportedly caught a man trying to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition. However, as the police tried to take the man into custody, ASP Nuhu Usman fired his weapon. The police confirmed that this accidental firearm discharge led to the immediate death of the suspect. They made it clear that the officer acted against the rules that govern how police should handle their weapons.
In response, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his entire team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. There, they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for prosecution. This move highlights the police’s zero-tolerance stance on the abuse of power. The leadership expressed deep sympathy for the family of the deceased and promised that justice would be served. They also asked the public to stay calm while the legal process moves forward. By taking this firm action after the accidental firearm discharge, the authorities hope to maintain public trust and show that no officer is above the law.
