The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised the decision of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to leave the Labour Party, describing it as political opportunism ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi announced his resignation on Sunday via his verified account on the social media platform X, citing internal challenges within the party.
In his statement, the former presidential candidate alleged that the Nigerian state and its agents contributed to what he described as “unnecessary crises and hostility” within the Labour Party, which he said led to his decision to exit. He also suggested that similar influences may be emerging within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Reacting on X, Onanuga said the development confirmed earlier claims about Obi’s political direction.
“We told you so. The political nomad is on the move again,” he wrote.
Onanuga also questioned Obi’s political strategy, suggesting he would face challenges competing for the presidential ticket within the ADC.
“He can’t fight Atiku or Amaechi for the ticket of ADC. He pursues the easy road,” he added.
The remarks come amid growing political realignments as parties and individuals position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
