Tottenham Hotspur took a major step in the Premier League relegation battle with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. The result lifted Spurs above West Ham United and out of the bottom three, giving fresh hope in their fight for survival.
After West Ham slipped against Brentford, Tottenham seized the moment. Conor Gallagher opened the scoring with a sharp low strike, before Richarlison doubled the lead with a strong header inside the first 25 minutes. Villa struggled to match Tottenham’s energy, likely distracted by their upcoming Europa League semi-final clash with Nottingham Forest. Their only real threat came late, as Emiliano Buendia scored a consolation header just before full time.
This win builds on Tottenham’s recent improvement. The side had endured a 15-match winless run before beating Wolverhampton Wanderers last week. Under new boss Roberto de Zerbi, the team has now collected seven points from four games, showing clear signs of recovery in the Premier League relegation battle.
De Zerbi remained cautious, saying, “The season is not finished yet. We have to play another three games starting on Monday night with Leeds; they are playing very well.” He added, “We can’t forget what the situation was before Wolves. It was very sad, and these memories must stay in our heads.”
Tottenham now sit 17th with 37 points, just ahead of West Ham. With momentum building, their position in the Premier League relegation battle looks more promising.
Can Tottenham maintain this momentum and secure their Premier League status?
