The Borno State Police Command has restated its zero-tolerance policy on torture and human rights violations, warning officers to uphold professionalism and strictly adhere to approved operational standards in the discharge of their duties.

The directive was issued on Monday, May 4, 2026, during a briefing held at the Police Headquarters in Maiduguri, where the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, addressed tactical commanders, divisional police officers, and heads of departments.

Abdulmajid reminded officers of the importance of accountability, restraint, and respect for human dignity during all policing operations across the state.

The warning comes amid increasing public concern over police conduct nationwide, following recent incidents that have intensified calls for stronger enforcement of use-of-force rules and improved protection of citizens’ rights.

The Commissioner stressed that torture, excessive force, and other forms of abuse are strictly prohibited under the law, adding that such actions violate the provisions of the Police Act and established operational guidelines of the Nigeria Police Force.

He noted that misconduct not only damages the image of the police institution but also erodes public trust, which is essential for effective policing, intelligence gathering, and community cooperation.

Abdulmajid further directed strict compliance with Force Order 237 on the use of force, emphasizing professionalism in all field operations.

He warned that any officer found guilty of human rights violations would face disciplinary action in accordance with existing procedures.

The Police Commissioner also encouraged members of the public to report cases of misconduct through the Police Complaint Response Unit and other official channels, assuring that all complaints would be treated with seriousness and confidentiality.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while maintaining respect for human rights and upholding global standards of professional policing.
