A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has dismissed claims by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that he controls the documents and structures of the party.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Sani argued that Wike neither possesses nor has the constitutional authority to keep the party’s official documents.
He was reacting to remarks made by Wike during a media parley on Wednesday, where the former Rivers State governor challenged the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the PDP to open a bank account or establish an office, warning that he would shut it down.
Sani insisted that, under the PDP constitution, custody of the party’s assets and documents rests solely with the Board of Trustees (BoT).
“Wike cannot even claim to have the documents of the party because, by our party constitution, that responsibility is bestowed on the Board of Trustees,” he said.
According to Sani, the recognised PDP Board of Trustees remains the one led by former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara.
“They decided to form their own BoT, and now our BoT, led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, is the conscience and custodian of the assets of the party,” he added.
Sani further questioned the basis of Wike’s claims, insisting that the FCT minister was merely attempting to project influence before the public.
“So where does Wike have documents to say that he is holding the documents? He does not have any documents. He’s just on national television trying to impress Nigerians,” Sani stated.
The latest exchange underscores the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP as rival factions continue to battle for control of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
