|By Adejumo Adekunle – Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has declared that nobody is contesting against Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, despite growing criticism of the government’s handling of security and economic challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television, Fayose argued that President Bola Tinubu remains the strongest contender ahead of the next general election. He insisted that opposition parties have weakened their chances by failing to unite behind a single candidate.
His comments come as concerns grow over insecurity, rising hardship and hunger across parts of Nigeria. Incidents in Oyo State, Kwara State and several northern states have intensified public debate about leadership and governance ahead of 2027.
Several politicians have already emerged as potential presidential contenders. They include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Omoyele Sowore and others.
However, Fayose maintained that nobody is contesting against Tinubu in practical terms because opposition parties are divided across different platforms.
He said a united opposition coalition could have posed a serious challenge to the president. Nevertheless, he argued that the emergence of multiple parties and candidates has weakened the opposition’s electoral prospects.
Fayose recalled the 2023 presidential election, which featured a three-way contest, and said a similar situation could benefit Tinubu again in 2027.
According to him, social media discussions do not always reflect political realities on the ground. He added that the fragmented opposition has made the president’s path to re-election easier.
The comments are likely to fuel debate over whether opposition leaders can build a strong alliance before Nigerians return to the polls in 2027.
