The Federal Government has announced the official programme for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, which will take place on 12 June 2026 across the country.

Unveiling the schedule, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, said the annual observance serves as a moment for Nigerians to remember the sacrifices made by citizens who struggled to restore democratic governance. He described Democracy Day as a significant national event that honours the country’s democratic journey and recognises those who played vital roles in securing civil rule.

According to Akume, the occasion will also celebrate the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, with special recognition given to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola. He noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity for the government to highlight its efforts in strengthening democratic institutions and driving national development despite ongoing socio-economic challenges.

The SGF explained that the planned activities will bring together various groups and stakeholders to mark the occasion and reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress. He added that the events will showcase the nation’s commitment to democratic values and inclusive governance.

The approved timetable begins with a World Press Conference on Thursday, 4 June 2026. This will be followed by Special Juma’at Prayers on Friday, 5 June, and a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on Sunday, 7 June. A Democracy Day Public Lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, 9 June, while Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes will hold on Wednesday, 10 June.

Activities for Democracy Day will conclude on Friday, 12 June, with a Presidential Broadcast and a Democracy Day Gala Night, marking the climax of the national celebration.
