The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed that reliable electricity remains a vital requirement for economic growth and social development, stressing that strong regulations are necessary to ensure the sector operates efficiently and serves the interests of both consumers and investors.

Speaking during the formal signing of key regulatory instruments for the state’s electricity industry on Tuesday, Chairman of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), Prof. Frank Okafor, said the new framework would establish clear standards for all participants in the power sector.

According to him, the regulations will help create a stable and transparent environment where investors can recover their investments while consumers receive quality services that reflect the value of their payments. He explained that the future growth of the Anambra power sector depends on adherence to these standards.

“There must be certain standards that must be maintained in the power sector in Anambra State, and if they are maintained the sector will run smoothly for the benefit of everyone.

“We are here to perform the first and most relevant function in ASERC. This presentation and signing of regulatory instruments ceremony is a defining moment for us because the development of Anambra electricity sector will be predicated on this.”

Okafor noted that the regulatory framework would clearly define the rights and responsibilities of operators, ensuring accountability and compliance across the industry. He also declared that monopoly practices would not be accepted in the state’s electricity market.

Addressing FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), he said competition would remain a priority. He urged the company to earn public confidence through quality service rather than rely on exclusive market control.

The event featured the official signing of the regulatory framework by Prof. Okafor and attracted major stakeholders, including Commissioner for Power, Mr. Casmir Agumadu, FirstPower Chairman, Dr. Okechukwu Okafor, and senior officials of the commission.
