The New York Knicks fought back from a 14-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 and take a 1-0 lead in the NBA Finals on Wednesday night.
Leading the charge was Jalen Brunson, who delivered a superb performance with 30 points, including 13 in the final quarter, to guide the Knicks to a remarkable comeback victory in Texas. The win gives New York an early advantage in the best-of-seven series ahead of game two on Friday.
The contest appeared to be slipping away from the Knicks after the Spurs built a commanding lead in the third quarter. However, Jalen Brunson rallied his teammates and helped turn the momentum in New York’s favour with a composed and clinical display down the stretch.
“Just sticking together — it wasn’t really our night and wasn’t really my night most of the night but we kept finding a way, kept chipping away,” Brunson said after the game.
The Knicks star also credited the team’s unity for the comeback, highlighting the strong chemistry within the squad.
Despite suffering an early knee scare in the first quarter, Jalen Brunson returned to play a decisive role in the victory. He received support from Karl-Anthony Towns, who scored 18 points, while OG Anunoby and Landry Shamet added 17 and 13 points respectively.
For the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. However, the French star endured a difficult shooting night, converting only six of his 21 attempts from the field.
“I was bad tonight, it’s not more complicated than that,” Wembanyama admitted.
The game remained tightly contested until the closing minutes before Brunson knocked down a crucial three-pointer to put New York ahead. The Knicks then finished strongly with eight unanswered points to seal the victory and claim a valuable opening win in the NBA Finals.
