Nyesom Wike urges Nigerian youths to embrace service-oriented leadership at University of Port Harcourt convocation

|By Chinwendu Nwani – Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike urges Nigerian youths to see leadership as a responsibility to serve the people rather than a path to personal enrichment.

Speaking at the 36th Convocation of the University of Port Harcourt, Wike told graduating students that Nigeria’s future depends on leaders who put public interest above private gain.

He argued that leadership is a commitment to the people and not an opportunity for self-glorification.

“Leadership is service. It is not an avenue for self-glorification, but a covenant with the people,” he said.

Wike also warned that corruption, abuse of office and selfish interests have weakened institutions and slowed national development.

Furthermore, he challenged graduates to build careers and public lives defined by integrity, courage and accountability.

“The true leader does not ask, ‘What do I gain from this office?’ but rather, ‘What do the people gain from my stewardship?’” he stated.

According to him, leadership should be measured by its impact on citizens and the strength of the institutions it leaves behind.

As a result, he urged the graduates to embrace values that promote national development and good governance.
