Deyemi Okanlawon says mediocrity thrives in Nigeria during podcast interview.

Deyemi Okanlawon says mediocrity thrives in Nigeria after the Nollywood actor and filmmaker argued that excellence is often overlooked while average performance receives greater rewards. He made the remarks during a recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast.

Okanlawon said Nigeria rewards people who appear less serious more than those who remain highly professional. Consequently, he warned that being “too professional” could slow career growth in some sectors.

He argued that mediocrity has become deeply rooted in society and claimed that professionals sometimes feel pressured to lower their standards to fit in. According to him, people who act less seriously often attract more opportunities than those who focus on excellence.

“In a country where mediocrity reigns, you can’t be too serious. Those who act the most unserious succeed the most. I have realised that you have to tone your intellect down a lot to succeed here,” he said.

However, his comments have already sparked debate online, with many Nigerians agreeing that the system often rewards connections and appearances over competence, while others insist professionalism remains the best path to lasting success.
