World No. 1 Jannik Sinner produced a dominant display to defeat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and book his place in the Wimbledon final, where he will face Alexander Zverev on Sunday. The victory marked Sinner’s second consecutive win over the seven-time champion at the tournament and strengthened his bid to retain the title.
The Wimbledon final will see the defending champion arrive in top form after delivering one of his finest performances of the competition. Sinner controlled the match from start to finish with outstanding serving, firing 16 aces, winning 88 per cent of his first-serve points and claiming 61 per cent of points behind his second serve.
Djokovic struggled to match the Italian’s pace throughout the two-hour, 20-minute contest. He earned only one break point, which came in the third set, but Sinner quickly shut down the opportunity with an ace before adding a powerful smash and another ace to seal his authority.
After the match, the 39-year-old Serbian admitted he was outplayed. He described the defeat as “a good old blow out” and said that “he was half a step late” for every shot.
Despite the result, Djokovic dismissed suggestions that fitness was the main issue. He said, “I was feeling physically fine. Maybe not the freshest, like at the beginning of the tournament, but I was all right. He [Sinner] was much better and the dominant force. You just have to hand it to him and say, ‘congrats, well done’.”
Attention now turns to the Wimbledon final, where Sinner will aim to defend his crown against Alexander Zverev.
Can Jannik Sinner complete another title-winning run by overcoming Alexander Zverev in the final?
