Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has explained why she believes women should not rush into marriage in their 20s, saying many are still discovering themselves during that period of their lives.
Speaking on a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moment, alongside reality TV star Tacha, Makinwa said many young women are not yet fully prepared to make a lifelong commitment because they are still growing personally and emotionally.
Sharing her opinion on marriage in your 20s, she argued that many women who married at a young age later wished they had waited longer before making such an important decision.
According to Makinwa, “Women have no business getting married in their 20s… You don’t even know yourself yet. Those who did are regretting it now. Even those who are still married if they are being honest, they will tell you that they shouldn’t have rushed it.”
During the conversation, Tacha also reflected on her mother’s views about marriage, describing it as an institution with different experiences for those inside and outside it.
Quoting her mother, she said, “My mum says marriage is like an institution. Those inside want to get out, those outside can’t wait to get in.”
The discussion has added to the ongoing public conversation about the right age for marriage and the importance of personal growth before making lifelong commitments. While opinions differ, Makinwa believes taking more time to understand oneself can help people make better relationship decisions.
Do you agree that women should wait until after their 20s before getting married?
