Man Arrested Over Devastating Spokane Wildfire

A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Washington state on suspicion of starting one of the three wildfires that have devastated the Spokane area. Authorities say the arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing Spokane wildfire investigation as emergency crews continue battling the fast-moving blazes.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced that Aaron Farinacci has been charged with first-degree arson over the Old Trails Fire. He is being held on a $1 million bond and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

The Old Trails Fire was first reported at about 12:00 p.m. on 1 August near the intersection of N. Old Trails Road and W. Euclid Road. According to Sheriff John Nowels, a witness noticed a man acting “looking very nervous.” After returning home, the witness saw smoke rising from the same area where the man had been seen and immediately contacted the police.

Investigators later identified the suspect as Aaron Farinacci, who was found about one and a half miles from the fire scene. Officers detained and questioned him before releasing him later that day. Authorities said he was carrying waterproof matches and a butane lighter when they made contact with him.

Officials confirmed that investigations into the Old Trails Fire, Autumn Lane Fire, and Fairview Fire remain ongoing. The three blazes, collectively known as the Spokane Complex Fire, all started on Saturday afternoon.

As of Monday afternoon, the Spokane wildfire had scorched more than 10,000 acres and remained 0% contained. The fires have destroyed at least 700 structures, including homes and businesses.

Describing the scale of the disaster, fire incident commander Tom Clemo said, “It’s unprecedented in this community. Frankly, it’s unprecedented in many areas of this country.”
