Lionel Messi’s Father Jorge Messi Dies Aged 68

Jorge Messi, the father and long-time representative of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has died aged 68 after a prolonged illness.

Messi’s boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, confirmed his death on Saturday, mourning him as a respected supporter, businessman and father of the Argentina star. The club said Jorge and his wife, Celia Cuccittini, played a vital role in Lionel’s career, supporting him “with vision, rigour and affection” from his early days at Malvinas, Newell’s youth training complex, through to the highest level of world football.

Newell’s also lowered its flag to half-mast following Jorge’s death. The club highlighted his constant support and work behind the scenes as Lionel developed from a young player in Rosario into one of football’s biggest stars.

Jorge had received medical treatment in recent months. In June, the Messi family confirmed that he was dealing with a health condition and remained under medical supervision. The family also asked for privacy and urged people not to speculate about his condition.

As Lionel Messi’s representative, Jorge played a major role in managing his son’s professional career from his teenage years. He was involved in important negotiations during Messi’s long spell at Barcelona, including the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Spanish club in 2021.

Lionel left Rosario for Barcelona at just 13 and went on to establish himself as one of the greatest players in football history. His father remained closely involved as his career later took him to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.

Jorge’s influence extended well beyond contract negotiations, as he remained a key figure in supporting Messi throughout his remarkable career.
