The UNIPORT demolition of illegal structures has begun as the University of Port Harcourt moves to enforce regulations governing the use of its property.

The university said the exercise followed a decision by the Finance and General Purpose Committee (F&GPC) of its Governing Council.

UNIPORT’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Sam Kpenu, disclosed this in a statement.

The university had earlier directed owners and occupants of illegal structures to remove their belongings and leave the affected areas.

It then commenced the demolition exercise after issuing the directive.

According to the university, the UNIPORT demolition of illegal structures aims to restore order and ensure that people comply with regulations governing university property.

The institution also said the exercise would support efforts to maintain a safe and conducive environment on its premises.

However, the university did not provide details in the statement on the number of structures affected or the total area covered by the demolition.

It also did not state whether further demolition exercises would take place in other parts of the university.

The university urged all affected persons to cooperate with officials and other relevant authorities during the exercise.

It said cooperation would help ensure that the process is carried out smoothly.

The latest action forms part of the university’s effort to regulate the use of its premises and address structures that it considers unauthorised.

The UNIPORT demolition of illegal structures is expected to continue in line with the decisions of the university’s governing authorities.

For affected property owners and occupants, the university’s directive requires them to comply with the instructions and vacate areas covered by the exercise.
