The internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a dramatic turn on Monday as a faction of the party in Adamawa State announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Also caught in the disciplinary net is the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.

The suspension was made public by Raji Sulaiman Zumo, the chairman of the ADC faction in Adamawa. This move adds a fresh layer of complexity to the party’s ongoing legal and administrative battles, just as the national body prepares for its scheduled convention in Abuja.

The turbulence within the ADC stems from a deep-seated leadership tussle at the national level. A rival faction, led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, continues to lay claim to the position of National Chairman, challenging the authority of the current leadership. This persistent infighting recently prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to derecognize the leadership under former Senate President David Mark, further blurring the lines of authority within the party.

These suspensions highlight the widening fractures within the ADC, as various state chapters and factions align themselves with different national power blocs. With high-profile figures like Atiku Abubakar and Babachir Lawal now officially sidelined by the Zumo-led faction, the party faces a critical test of unity ahead of the next electoral cycle.

How do you think the derecognition of David Mark’s leadership by INEC will impact the legitimacy of the ADC’s upcoming national convention?
