Babatunji Wusu –
Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, is currently in a meeting with the leaders of all political parties that will be contesting the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo State.
Recall that the governorship elections in the three states were slated for November 11 by INEC.
Yakubu and the leaders of the relevant political parties have arrived at INEC’s Abuja headquarters, where the commission’s president would likely brief the parties on preparations and their roles in the elections.
The parties might use this opportunity to discuss their worries and observations with the INEC chairman prior to the exercise.
As of the time this story was filed, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Umar Damagum, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, and representatives from other parties had all gathered at the meeting location.
After raising concern about INEC reconfiguring BVAS inside the Kogi Government House, Ajaka apologizes.
Muritala Ajaka, a candidate for governor on the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, has since issued an apology for his initial assertion that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) intended to rig the November 11 election in favor of a particular candidate.
In a new statement, Ajaka expressed confidence in the capabilities of INEC to hold a legitimate governorship election in Kogi through his campaign spokeswoman, Faruk Adejoh-Audu.
Three election officials were in the state Government House rearranging BVAS to favor a particular candidate, according to the Kogi State chapter of the SDP.
But INEC urged the public to ignore the reports since they are false in a statement released on Saturday by Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman.
Later, Ajaka’s campaign spokesperson cited him as having changed his mind and said that he is confident in INEC’s ability to hold credible elections.
According to Adejoh-Audu, the SDP candidate apologized during a meeting with party leaders on Saturday in Abuja.
He reaffirmed the party’s faith in the changes implemented by INEC.
“All of our supporters should not pay attention to any reports of thieves configuring BVAS devices. It’s simply not feasible. We have complete faith in INEC’s competence to secure our votes, according to Ajaka.
