Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua returned to the spotlight on Saturday night, making his first public appearance since a tragic car accident in Nigeria late last year. The British star had maintained a strictly private profile since the December 29 crash, which claimed the lives of his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Stepping out at London’s O2 Arena, Joshua appeared composed as he arrived to support fellow veteran Derek Chisora in what was billed as the 50th and final fight of Chisora’s storied career.

Arriving in a white tracksuit alongside promoter Eddie Hearn, Joshua navigated a gauntlet of camera crews to take his place ringside for the heavyweight clash against Deontay Wilder. Despite the high-profile nature of the event, there was a noticeable chill between Joshua and his long-time rival Wilder; the American reportedly walked straight past Joshua in a tight corridor without acknowledgement, signaling that their historical competitive friction remains unresolved.

During a ringside interview with DAZN, Joshua focused on the sport rather than his recent personal trauma. “It’s amazing to be here,” he remarked. “Boxing, especially British boxing, is booming. I’m obviously biased… I’m Team Chisora.” While fans were eager to see the former champ, Eddie Hearn reiterated that Joshua still needs significant time to heal physically and emotionally before any serious discussion regarding a return to the ring can take place.

Joshua’s last competitive outing was a unique crossover bout against Jake Paul in Miami just before Christmas. While speculation regarding a domestic “Battle of Britain” against Tyson Fury continues to dominate headlines, Saturday night was purely about respect for a departing legend. Joshua’s presence at the O2 served as a quiet reminder of his enduring status in the sport, even as he navigates one of the most challenging periods of his personal life.

Do you think Anthony Joshua should take a long hiatus to fully recover from his recent trauma, or is returning to the gym the best way for him to find peace?
